About Us

HISTORY: SVA began in 1964 as a Junior League project.  In 1966 the American Association of University Women assumed leadership.  SVA was incorporated in 1967 and expanded into a citywide program working with the School Volunteer Office to organize volunteer readers, tutors and mentors and programs for students.  SVA was one of the country’s first school volunteer organizations.  On June 21, 1968, Life magazine marked SVA’s first anniversary with a nine page pictorial spread.

WHO WE ARE: SVA is administered by an all volunteer Board of Directors who work closely with the Bridgeport Board of Education through the School Volunteer Office.  Hundreds of volunteers serve each year in SVA programs.

First grade teacher, Rosa Mahkzangi, said of her reader,

“Mr. Viores has done a wonderful job reading to my class, and the students enjoy his reading. He sends positive messages to my students about how important it is to read all the time and go to the library…Thanks for the volunteer.”
